The responsibilities of the Council as stipulated In the Act are as follows

1. To promote the development and usage of Kiswahili throughout the United Republic of Tanzania
2. To cooperate with other bodies in the United Republic of Tanzania which are involved in the promotion of Kiswahili and endeavor to coordinate their activities
3. To encourage the use of Kiswahili In official and public activities
4. To encourage the achievement of high standards in the use of Kiswahili language and to discourage its misuse
5. To cooperate with the authorities concerned in approving Kiswahili translation of technical terms
6. To publish a newspaper or magazine on Kiswahili language and literature
7. To provide services to the Government, public organizations and individual authors writing in Kiswahili

10. To inspect new books or manuscripts written or translated into Kiswahili and certify the authenticity of the language
11. o cooperate with publishers and writers for the correct use of Kiswahili
12. To initiate Kiswahili writing competitions
13. To cooperate with the Ministry of National Education in approving Kiswahili textbooks written for educational purposes before they are published
