THEME:  Kiswahili - A pillar of Unity, Education and Economic Development.

The following are the academic departments of BAKITA and their responsibilities. The second part of the Council’s Organizational Structure comprises the Secretariat which incorporates respective heads of departments responsible for daily activities of the Council.

BAKITA has Seven departments as follows:-

  1. Department of Editing and Publication
  2. Department of Language and Literature
  3. Department of Translation and Interpretation
  4. Department of Lexicon and Dictionary
  5. Department of Public Relations
  6. Department of Finance
  7. Department of Labour and Administration

Activities and responsibilities of the departments are summarized hereunder:-

  1. To provide consultancy services to rising and seasoned writers
  2. To edit academic and common core texts
  3. To publish BAKITA journals and other publications
  4. To publicize, seek markets and sell BAKITA publications by participating in different demonstrations
  5. To coordinate essay writing competitions among different groups
  6. To participate effectively in the book writing industry
  1. To oversee correct use of standard Kiswahili on the media and in formal domains
  2. To accredit correct use of standard Kiswahili in manuscripts intended for educational purposes
  3. To coordinate use and promotion of Kiswahili in different regions, at workplaces, and among various groups of supporters of Kiswahili
  4. To monitor promotion and use of Kiswahili among foreigners in and out of the United Republic of Tanzania
  1. To provide translation and interpretation services in different languages to institutions, departments, ministries, embassies and individuals
  2. To coordinate and provide interpretation services in national and international conferences and in different activities of institutions, companies and individuals
  3. To review and certify translations done by different institutions or by out-sourced translators
  4. To give advice on issues concerning translation and interpretation
  1. To conduct research on the vocabulary which need to be standardized by the Language Standardization Committee
  2. To prepare a list of vocabulary items which are standardized by the Language Standardization Committee and approved by the Council
  3. To prepare standard vocabulary items for publication in different editions of Standard Translation and monitor their use
  4. To compile dictionaries for use by different institutions, schools and wider public
  5. To explain vocabulary to interested parties
  1. To publicize products and activities of the Council through Radio, Newspapers, Journals and Magazines
  2. To coordinate activities of the Council and other bodies which promote Kiswahili within and out of the Council
  3. To manage Kiswahili Programmes on the Radio and Television
  4. To strengthen relations with other language promoting bodies by organizing workshops and seminars in order to promote cooperation and harmony
  1. To supervise and account for audit querries
  2. To monitor preparation of fiscal year accounts
  3. To supervise preparation of annual financial audit reports
  4. To monitor, certify and approve payments
  5. To issue financial reports quarterly, semi-annually and annually
  6. To prepare Council’s budget
  7. To supervise preparation of all account reports and ensure that they are submitted to relevant authorities
  8. To review and prepare financial regulations
  1. To interpret different labour laws, regulations, procedures and provisions and give advice on their implementation
  2. To design and prepare guidelines for identification and estimation of training needs.
  3. To supervise and prepare personnel salaries
  4. To implement laws pertaining to rights and benefits of employees
  5. To supervise formation of Workers Council pursaunt to laws, regulations and procedures
  6. To follow up, keep records and work on benefits of retiring employees
  7. To coordinate implementation of training plans
  8. To prepare reports on service and submit them to the relevant authority
  9. To supervise service schemes updates
  10. To monitor office admninistrative activities
  11. To supervise performance appraisal
  12. To monitor disciplinary matters at the workpace
